Original Post November 2010: John Mitchell

Earlier today John visited the newly refurbished Henry Whipple Primary School in Nottingham, which staff and pupils only moved into earlier in the week.

We started working with staff in the school in spring 2008, to develop a shared vision for their new school, and continued working with them over the following months to develop this vision into a clear shape and design brief. This brief focussed around a simple and clear organisation, with a central heart space around which the whole school would focus, and the provision of four pairs of class bases, each with a shared resource/ break out area, and access direct to the heart space and direct to an external learning/ play area. As Capita Architects developed the design, we continued to support the school to ensure that the developing design met the overall vision.

The completed project, delivered by Inspired Spaces and Capita Architects has completely transformed the school. Mostly remodelling the existing school buildings, forming a new and highly invitational entrance, roofing over the existing courtyard to form an inside/ outside heart space, remodelling existing classrooms to create large, light and airy linked learning spaces, and transforming the underused playground into a delightful outdoor learning environment.
